Splat on a Hot Tin Room:

Just a set up for bog entries documenting my thoughts about life, theatre, corgis, food....and a plethora of wild and possible unrelated topics!

August 28, 2020

Well, hello! You’ve stumbled up the weird and poorly spelled ramblings which purport to be a blog. Be forewarned, I’ve never been able to maintain a journal consistently for more than a few weeks. There was a time in college (which seems like yesterday and also a lifetime ago) which I was able to sustain a journal for a few months. But invariably, the entries became fewer and finally stopped. And yet, I can’t bear to throw any of my half completed journals which rest hidden in the bookcase behind me. I’m also not the greatest (meaning “terrible”) typist and I loathe to proofread, so as Margo Channing pronounced, “Fasten your seatbelts; it’s going to be a bumpy ride!”

I’m an actor/singer/director (Yes, like Barbra Streisand, but without the fame and money). And talent? Well, it goes without saying that I don’t have her talent. Talent is so subjective. Her talent is uniquely hers, and mine is mine….and yes, yours is yours. So maybe there is some gloriously quirky individual out that that strangely believes that Babs is a hack, and I’m the criminally neglected talent of the decade. If so, I love you! Keep that flag waving high!

In fact, I’ve been nominated for four theatre awards for work last season - (insert applause): One for directing; one for playing a supporting role in a musical and two noms for cabaret performances. The winners will be announced in October so there will be plenty of time for me to elaborate in this topic. There’s normally an awards ceremony (where folks get gussied up and celebrate and commiserate), but COVID-19 put a stop to any large gatherings…including theatre.

This is been the longest period (since moving to the Coachella five years ago), in which I haven’t been prepping, rehearsing or performing in a production – sometimes all three at the same time (I’ve been very fortunate)! Five months since my last onstage performance. I know…boo-hoo. Actor problems. Even typing this feels so egotistical and petty when I realize that so many people are struggling, grieving and dying during the past months. Ok, let’s shift the subject a bit…It’s getting a bit dark and serious here. I hope that you might have come here to seek some relief some the inescapable stress and anxiety which infects us as deeply as any virus.

As I mentioned, it’s been 5 months since I’ve been involved in any theatrical productions. I opened a production of Mel Brook’s THE PRODUCERS on March 13 playing the role of Max Biaystock, The following morning, the production was placed on hold; the production is hopefully going to reopen almost one year later in March 2021. Such a strange feeling of suddenly being placed on hiatus for a year. The production hopes to retain as much of the original cast as possible. The phrase “Hurry up and wait!” never seemed more appropriate!

I think that’s enough for today. Hope you stick around and read my next entry which should appear tomorrow. Thanks you for your time. Stay safe and happy!

P.S. I don’t know enough about blogs, so I hope you’ll bear with me while I learn all the bells and whistles!
